Bishop Willigers Secondary School

It was clear in 2009 that for all the work that we were doing at St Michael’s Girls Primary that unless we built a Secondary School in the village that too many girls and pupils from other local primary schools were going to drop out of education as there was no Secondary School in the community.

We started building on land next to St Michael’s in 2009. The first classroom was very basic with just 12 pupils.

The school is now government grant aided (government paid teachers) and growing every year. There are now 600 pupils (girls and boys) in the four years and eventually when we have the funds we hope to build a 6th Form Centre - there is the need - many students get good UCE results and want to continue to A Levels.

  • In 2009 one basic classroom and 12 pupils

  • Another classroom block under construction

  • Every student has a desk - 600

  • The building of the girls’ hostel block

We are so proud of what has been achieved at the school for far. Already the national exam results are looking good. More than 50% of the pupils are girls.

We have already funded :-

  • Classrooms blocks and an administration block

  • Connection to the Electricity Grid

  • 4 Blocks of Latrines

  • 2 Blocks of Staff Accommodation

  • Equipping a Medical Centre

  • Text Books and Reading Books

  • Desks for all pupils

  • Fencing

  • Hostel Accommodation for 70 girls

  • Kitchen

  • Football and Netball sports area

  • Library/Literacy Hub

  • Science Equipment

  • Full Bursaries for girls

  • 4 girls on full bursaries

  • Bishop Willigers is being built on land next to St Michael’s. This Google image clearly show just how rural the schools are

  • Netball and Football is very competitive

  • Separate Sciences are taught - Biology, Physics and Chemistry - but as yet no dedicated Science Block

  • Staff Accommodation is so important and we need to keep building to retain good teachers

  • The first of the girls’ hostel blocks being painted - but another 2 blocks are needed such is the demand from girls living deep in the village
